Wolfenstein: The New Order - Interview
We talk to Machine Games about Nazi mechs, Inglorious Basterds, and the return of B.J. Blazkowicz.
GRTV's Gillen McAllister talks to Machine Games' Jens Matthies about the return of B.J. Blazkowicz in {Wolfenstein: The New Order}.
Matthies, the game's creative director, explained The New Order's story: "It's sort of an honouring of {Wolfenstein 3D}, but we've done some drastic things to the world. The year is now 1960. The Nazis have now won the war, and they won using some sort of weird and mysterious technology, and classic Wolfenstein protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz is back and he has to sort of reignite the resistance movement and overthrow the Nazi regime."
Of course the original Wolfenstein game was an inspiration for the studio: "Really strong first-person experiences is our passion, and that all harkens back to the experience of first playing {Wolfenstein 3D} back in the day..."
That said, the id original wasn't the only major influence on the game. Matthies explained that a certain Tarantino movie also inspired the game's tone: "What we used as a reference to sort of wrap our heads around it, and wrap other people's heads around it in the conceptual stage was Inglorious Basterds, because that movie walks a very fine line between really serious heavy drama and over-the-top just crazy shooting Hitler in the face type stuff. So that was an inspiration for us in terms of the tone."
