We chat about interactive mixed reality with The Future Group

Ellen Lyse Einarsen on how mixed reality could make for interesting interactive TV and esports presentation.

Mixed reality is something that is sure to be part of the gaming space and media space in the future, but the aptly named The Future Group are working on that today with a TV format called Lost in Time and rendering platform called Frontier. We caught up with Ellen Lyse Einarsen at Gamelab to learn more.

"We have created a technology which basically is a graphics rendering platform," explains Lyse Einarsen. "Using a specialised version of the Unreal Engine where you can put real people into virtual worlds and let them interact with the virtual world using physical props and then an audience at home can watch television or stream it and see the content as if the person is in the virtual world."

This technology has already been used with esports in the context of a {Street Fighter V} tournament (Turner-IMG's ELeague).

"We live-rendered AR characters on the stage as the esports event was happening so that the audience could also see the characters preparing and hopping around. And the fact that it's live that makes it for the camera man, they can make move around and act on what the virtual character does."

The chat with Ellen Lyse Einarsen also touched on her time at Funcom on Age of Conan and her stance on making the gaming industry more inclusive.
