Tom Clancy's ShadowBreak

ShadowBreak has soft launch on Android and iOS

The full launch should be later this year.

Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's ShadowBreak has soft launched on Android and iOS devices in Canada as of yesterday, a game which sees you fill the shoes of an elite marksman taking command of a number of soldiers, both using strategy to deploy them as well as covering them with sniper fire.

ShadowBreak comprises of three minute matches, where you'll manage both strategy and shooting, and as you progress you'll earn more guns and more units.

"Our hope is that the balance between these two aspects is very tight," said AJ Morales, ShadowBreak's creative director, on the Ubisoft blog. "If you're a great marksman with an inferior troop loadout, you're still going to have a strong avenue to victory. If you're not as strong in your shooter prowess but have superior troops and strategy, you've still got a great shot at the win."

Reward crates an be earned in the game, supplying you with cash for transactions and specialised cards to unlock and upgrade gear. Three gear items can be applied to each gun you have, doing things like making you harder to spot, and you can also customise your appearance too.

"A lot of the ingredients for success in ShadowBreak come not just from leveling up your troops, gear, and guns, but also from discovering and experimenting with different combinations of troops and equipment," Morales continues. "Because you have to roll out your attack while counteracting your opponent in three minutes, you'll see situations where just destroying a single base is enough to squeak out a win at the buzzer."

"We're hoping to give our players new modes, units, weapons, arenas, and more to keep them engaged and competitive for quite some time. For us, this isn't a one-and-done scenario. Our team is in this for the long haul," he concludes.

ShadowBreak has soft launched in Canada for Android and iOS, but should be available worldwide later this year. Is this balance of sniping and commanding something new and refreshing?
