Microtransactions in Payday 2
Community reacts strongly to the introduction of stat boosting skins.
"We've made it clear that {Payday 2} will have no microtransactions whatsoever (shame on you if you thought otherwise!)."
This quote is from the {Payday 2} developer Overkill Software, who wrote in on the Steam forums. Sounds like a pretty clear message, even if it is a couple of years old. Well, it turns out it wasn't as clear cut as there is now microtransactions have been introduced as part of the Crimefest community event. The idea is that random safes appear, these can only be opened with drills that are bought with real money ($2.49). The safes contain weapon skins of varying quality (i.e. these microtransactions actually affects your stats). The idea then is that via Steam's community market players can buy, sell and trade these skins.
<a href=http://www.destructoid.com/payday-2-adding-microtransactions-after-developer-said-it-wouldn-t-315725.phtml">Destructoid</a> reports that fans with the game are furious and are complaining via new reviews for the game on Steam - which moderators are reportedly deleting (though you can see plenty on the Steam page in spite of this). There are also a lot of complaints on both NeoGAF, Reddit and other forums from disappointed gamers, some who have clocked in over 1,000 hours with the game.
Obviously the community celebration have backfired and it remains to be seen how Overkill and Starbreeze tackle the negative reaction.
