Indie Calendar - Kyn
In the run up to Christmas we'll be unwrapping a series of exciting indie titles.
{Kyn} is a game that first appeared on our radar at Gamescom earlier this year. It may look the part of a top-down action-RPG similar to say Diablo, but the twist here is that you control a group independently of each other and you while it is played in real-time you can slow down time to line up attacks and strategise.
"It sort of plays like a hack n' slasher, but we can slow it down, because you control multiple characters and it's quite hard for most players to control up to six characters at the same time so that sometimes you need some time to think how you're going to approach a certain group of enemies," said Tangrin's Victor Legerstee in an interview with us at the German event.
Tangrin Entertainment is a small indie team headed by Victor Legerstee and Cavit Ozturk and located in the Netherlands. {Kyn} is being published by the recently set up Versus Evil and has been confirmed for release on PS4 along with the rest of the company's line-up ({The Banner Saga}, Toren, and {Armikrog}), however first priority is to get the game out on PC/Mac/Linux.
"For next year our main goal is to release the PC/Mac/Linux versions of {Kyn}," said Legerstee. "We are also figuring out a console version too. Porting controls from a PC mouse/keyboard to a console gamepad can be a bit of a challenge, and we all know of games in the past that have gotten it wrong (going from console to pc, or visa versa). But so far for {Kyn} is looking really promising so I think {Kyn} will be a welcome addition to the platforms."
"If {Kyn} sells well we would also really like to move into an office. Currently we are actually doing everything through Skype/e-mail/google docs with the team spread out over different locations. We are used to working this way and it has worked well for us so far, but there are also benefits to working in one place, especially as the team grows."

It certainly seems like 2015 will be an exciting year for Tangrin Entertainment. Apart from the combat and the fact that you control the entire group independently, {Kyn} offers a rich world ripe for exploration and a intriguing crafting system where unlocking more advanced schematics will be a proper challenge.
"We also looking forward to doing game jams again and also prototype at least a couple of new games next year. We have a big document full of ideas, big and small. I think we will probably take a month or so to build prototypes, probably 5 prototypes and see if something sticks. The ideas are all over the place, ranging from tactical concepts that are continuing where {Kyn} ends, racing games, to weird time travel game ideas. I honestly have no idea which one it will be since you can't tell if a game works until you prototype it, but the racing game has kept my mind occupied for quite a while now..."
