GRTV: Warface Interview
We get existential with Crytek.
At Gamescom this year Gillen caught up with {Warface}'s producer Peter Holzapfel, and he talked to us about Crytek's free shooter and how they plan to keep players interested.
We discussed the irony in the Hamlet-esque publicity shot: "{Warface} is a jump in, have fun, shoot people, kind of game. You'll see that when you play it... it's super accessible. Instant fun, basically. The question behind it is: to be, or not to be? It's the ultimate shooter question, in a way. So there is self-irony attached to it."

"It's not free to play, it's a free Crytek game" is a mantra being pursued by the company, and Holzapfel explains Crytek's thinking: "Free to play has this stigma attached to it, like mediocre quality, pay to win, and those are things that Crytek wants to stay away from. And with this, it's a Crytek game for free, and with this attitude there's a whole thing attached to it from a development point of view that we're really excited about, that we think in the end is going to be good for the developers and the players alike."
He also discussed with us the how best to keep players attached to a free to play game when there's so much competition out there: "Obviously with a boxed product, when you buy it you're kind of committed to it, in a way. So with being online and being free, people have to opportunity to jump to another game every time they log in. So you have to get it right, to actually attach the player to the game and the best way to do it is just make an awesome game."
