GRTV: RuneScape - Content Manager Interview
On giving players freedom and pushing what the browser space is capable of.
Gillen catches up with content manager Dean Ollive to learn more about his role on {RuneScape} and what's next for the everlasting MMORPG.
"We want to give players the tools and the framework so that they can take their adventure in the direction they want, to what ends we don't know yet."
Jagex have are pushing the envelope as far as browser based gaming goes with the html 5-based "{RuneScape} 3" if you will:
"Our engine guys are crazy, they're always looking at the next boundary, trying to go beyond what technology is actually capable of at the time, so when this [html 5] came along they were ready for it. That's why we're so far ahead the curve on this one."
On how browser-based gaming is perceived compared to AAA titles:
"Many companies and gamers alike probably just snub us because we are for a browser... But I ask probably all of you to try and find a interface customisation in real-time that is as diverse as ours, and as customisable as ours as well. I mean we've just taken something that some people do half-heartedly should I say and taken it to the next level and it's not just about putting the story in the player's sort of hands, it's about putting the interface... I've played many a games where I'd think I'd just like to put that over there to the right - the players can now do that a long with determining their narrative path through the adventure."
