GR Retro: Xevious
We head back to 1983 aboard the good ship Solvalou to rediscover one of the first vertical scrolling shooters.
Released back in 1983, Xevious was one of the first vertical shooters , born out of the evolution of the genre in the wake of Namco's Galaga. The on-rails shooter had us soaring up the screen, shooting enemies.
Xevious had one distinction from its parent - the ability to drop bombs on ground troops, giving the game a pseudo-3D feel. The game went on to inspire many other vertical shooters after it, including Konami's TwinBee series (the ships in which would in turn appear in Konami's side-scrolling shooter parody, Paradious).
