Expansive Worlds talks theHunter: Primal

"Primal is kind of a funny story".

We caught up with Expansive Worlds (subsidiary of Avalanche Studios) CEO Pim Holfve to talk about the creation of {theHunter: Primal} - a dinosaur flavoured survival take on their popular hunting simulation.

"Primal is kind of a funny story," says Holfve when we ask him how the idea came about. "We've been running {The Hunter} since 2009 and as you say it's a serious game. But in the dialogue that we have with out players constantly, one request has been popping up every now and then ever since the start. And that's hunting dinosaurs. It has never really made any sense to us, because it is a hardcore realistic hunting game and dinosaurs even if they did exist. Well, they did, but we couldn't really see that we could put it in the game. When we launched on Steam last summer that request became even more frequent. We got a lot of players saying 'oh, this is so cool, so realistic, but I would love to shoot a T-Rex in here. And at the very same time one of our interns started playing around in his spare time in the engine with a T-Rex. So I would say that all of sudden the stars were sort of aligned and I thought that this could actually be something."

Holfve also outlined the plans for further dinosaurs, and talked about PvP where he imagines going on a hunt with a friend and maybe turn around and shoot them in order to escape a particularly sticky situation.

TheHunter: Primal is currently available via Steam Early Access.
