Pathologic 2

Pathologic 2 is "somewhere between a remake and a sequel"

The rebooted cult classic is heading to PC in May, and will follow on Xbox One later in the year.

There might be a few of you out there with a special place in your heart for {Pathologic}, a game that landed back in 2005 and that went on to earn itself something of a cult following. Now the game is set to make a return, of sorts, and producer Andrei Podoprigora was at PAX East to tell us more about it.

"This is a [revised] version of the game, it's somewhere between a remake and a sequel because [...] the town and the characters in the game are more-or-less the same, but the story is so much deeper and so much more revised, so we decided to make it {Pathologic 2} to avoid confusion."

"It's been a challenge," Podoprigora explained when we asked about the process of updating a fan-favourite. According to the man from tinyBuild, both studio and publisher have been working "to make sure the new game appeals to the existing core following of the original game, that those players love it, but then we make sure that this game appeals to a wider audience because we obviously want as many people to learn about the game and enjoy it."

In {Pathologic 2} the player controls a doctor who returns to his hometown to find it ravaged by a plague and with a bunch of similarly sinister events unfolding all around. Through the course of the campaign, the player will have to stay alive by scavenging for food and helping out the locals.

"It's an interesting mix of different mechanics on top of [the] narrative driven core of the game," Podoprigora told us. While he did tell us a little about the story, the studio clearly wants to keep players in the dark for now, which makes sense given the mysterious atmosphere the game clearly tries to build. We'll find out more about this ominous reboot when it lands on PC on May 23 (with it set to follow on Xbox One later in the year).
