Ubisoft doesn't consider subscriptions a viable model yet

Chris Early sees it as "inhibiting our progress".

A few of the biggest publishers around have a subscription model available right now, be that Sony's PlayStation Now, Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass, or even EA's Access, but you shouldn't expect Ubisoft to do the same just yet, as they simply don't consider this a viable business model... at least right now.

Speaking at a new panel by Akamai (a transcript of which was provided by GamesBeat), Ubisoft's Vice President of Partnerships & Revenue Chris Early spoke at length about subscription models, and it would seem that Ubisoft simply doesn't find a subscription service financially viable.

"I actually view subscription gaming as inhibiting our progress, and I'll give you two examples," he explained. "One is with PS Now. I think that's a great technology for getting streaming content to people, but we don't make the money as a publisher — we don't make the same amount of money as we would even just putting stuff on sale. So why bother, from a publisher's standpoint?"

With exciting games like Skull & Bones releasing in the future, Ubisoft is looking pretty good right now, but do you agree with their stance on subscription models?
