Here's what we know about Splatoon 2

After it was teased during the Switch's reveal trailer, Nintendo has announced a new {Splatoon} game to beef up its 2017 line-up - but it wasn't quite the Wii U port many were expecting. Instead, we're getting a full sequel to Nintendo's ink-splattering third-person shooter series. Here's everything we know about the game so far:

While on the surface {Splatoon 2} might look incredibly similar to its predecessor, producer Hisashi Nogami insists that the sequel will keep things fresh with new maps, fashion and weapons. Splat Dualies are a new duel-pistol weapon which can be used similarly to a jetpack to help manoeuvre across the stage. Fan favourites, the Splat Roller and Splat Charger are also to make a return with revised mechanics.

The game can be played using either the Joy-Con controller or the more traditional Pro Controller. Gyro controls are also back, allowing you to aim ink with more precision. As there's no secondary screen this time around, the map can now be viewed with a press of a button. Meanwhile the Super Jump has become a lot more convenient, simply requiring you to press the button assigned to a teammate to instantly reach their location.

Arguably the most exciting feature of {Splatoon 2} is the ability to compete in the main Turf War mode locally as well online - an option which was distinctly lacking from the original game. Local multiplayer will work whether the Switch is in TV, handheld or tabletop mode.

Interestingly, the game will also be compatible with smart devices. As part of Nintendo's revised online services, the Switch will be receiving a smartphone application which will help enhance matchmaking and finally allow players to communicate through voice chat.

Similar to the Wii U game, the sequel will be receiving continued support post-launch, with updates planned to add new content periodically. Whether or not the updates will be free this time around has yet to be confirmed.

More specific details on what to expect from the game's content, such as a single-player campaign, has also yet to be discussed. {Splatoon 2} releases on Nintendo Switch this summer.
