Night Trap returns via Kickstarter
Controversial title chasing a comeback.
{Night Trap} was a full-motion video game that landed on Sega CD (then PC, Mac and 3DO) back in early 90s, and it was controversial because it had players protecting youngsters (mainly girls) at a sleepover, with masked assailants trying to gain entry to the house, with the player using traps to stop them.
After all those years out in the wilderness, the game is looking to make a comeback, and it's doing so via the medium of Kickstarter, where developers who were involved with the original game are asking for $330k so they can bring it to market once again.
It's worth noting that the money being asked for is to go towards "the coding, manufacturing and fulfillment of the rewards we are offering." It sounds like most of the work has been done.
It's also worth considering that the pitch mentions that if they raise additional funds they'll be using that money to buy up the rights to other games by Digital Pictures (the studio that made the original). It sounds like those who contribute funds will also be helping the developers with future projects, not just this one.
Anyway, here's the batshit plot and a trailer that shows exactly why the game was so creepy/controversial the first time around:
A group of teens has arrived at the isolated Martin home for a weekend of fun and partying. But at a house where the sinister hosts possess strange powers, a creepy neighbor has invented a deadly laser weapon, and blood-sucking creatures stalk the hallways, it's no surprise that good cheer quickly turns to fear. Fortunately for the girls, the heroic agents of the Special Control Attack Team are on the job! As a crack S.C.A.T. operative with a security-camera-guided view of all the action, it's your job to trigger the traps planted throughout the house and imprison the evil Augers before they can suck the blood of their innocent victims.
